The fascination with McDonald's and Coca-Cola seems so bizarre to me. It's classism all over again - the French are really big on this. Save the croissant! Kill McDonalds!

In the meantime, I shop for groceries at a store that has two rows of shelves 50 feet long stocked with brands of food from Latin America, including Inca Cola and a couple dozen other varieties of soda pop (coconut flavors are really popular, it seems) and at least five different brands of masa. It has 25 ft of shelves filled with food from the Middle East. Also food from Asia. This in a grocery store that caters to the community in general.

When I look out my bedroom window, I see houses occupied by two black American families, four white American families, one Middle Eastern American family, one Chinese American family, and one Vietnamese American family.

If I want to go to a specialty market, there are ones for Vietnamese, Koreans, Middle Easterners, Indians, Chinese, Latin Americans, Africans, and Europeans.

Or I could go to Starbucks and have espresso and a croissant.

Personally, I don't feel threatened by all of this. I feel incredibly enriched.

There are Americans who feel threatened. They move to Montana and Idaho and join militias and foam at the mouth about Zionists and non-whites taking over the government and the country.
