Paranoia. Sorry, but it's true.

I know people who work for the CIA. They're ordinary Washington bureaucrats. They have almost no employees who speak Arabic, and after 9/11 are scrambling desperately to get some.

The main purpose of the CIA is to gather intelligence. That's why it's called the Central Intelligence Agency.

Yes, they do get involved in covert operations, but they don't run the world. Sharing information is the usual thing they do, or maybe giving somebody money. And the recipient of the information or the money does what he wanted to do anyway, only the CIA made it easier.

Other US agencies do the same, only not covertly. And US business interests do the same.

And so do the Russians, the Chinese, the French, the Saudis, etc., etc., etc., all trying to promote their own interests.
