In TV broadcast, Saddam tells Iraqis to resist coalition

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - President Saddam Hussein appeared Friday on Iraqi television and urged Iraqis to strike at the U.S.-led coalition now at the gates of his capital.
Wearing a military uniform, Saddam said the U.S.-led forces had "bypassed your armed defenses" around Baghdad and other cities and urged his followers to "strike them forcefully, strike them."

The grim-faced Saddam appeared with an Iraqi flag over his right shoulder. He paused occasionally to turn the pages of a notebook as he delivered his speech.

He began by saying the enemy had strived but failed to shake the steadfastness of the Iraqi people.

He called upon Baghdad's people to resist whenever the aggressors came closer and to stick to "your principles, your patriotism and the honor of men and women."
