Germany withdrew from the League Of Nations for similar reasons in 1933. It's easy to afford an attitude that completely discounts what the world thinks or believes when you can simply squash them (and pay for it on a credit card). And the massive contracts to friends back in the states certainly won't hurt reelection chances, either.
