This doesn't strike me as a wise idea for Tony Blair to be making promises that only the US can make. politics.guardian.co.uk Tony Blair is to deploy his persuasive powers in southern Iraq with hundreds of thousands of leaflets containing a personal promise in Arabic that the country will be given self government as soon as possible. British troops will distribute 60,000 copies daily of Mr Blair's pledge, which includes a commitment that the UN will be involved. His message is an implicit admission that coalition forces have a long way to go to win Iraqi "hearts and minds". The prime minister also went on Abu Dhabi television yesterday to promise that the Iraqi interim administration endorsed by the UN will decide which companies should receive reconstruction contracts. He denied the contracts will all go to the US, pointing out that under US law the separate short term humanitarian or aid contracts have to go to US firms. Downing Street said no significance should be drawn from the fact that the message is not signed jointly with President George Bush.
