The way I understand your argument, you think that there are a lot of people who don't want to have any further contact with mass culture once they've experienced it.

This could be, but I think what you're really seeing are aesthetic differences, preferences, like the preferences for pita or naan or baguette.

I've been inside houses belonging to people from the Middle East here in the US and they are not exactly like common American houses. They have a lot of rugs, and the furniture is more traditional, and they have wash basins to wash before prayers. And I've seen the inside of Middle Eastern houses on Al-Jazeera, and they don't look all that different from what I've seen with my own eyes here.

TV vs. communal folk-singing -- how far do you want to take this argument? Do you want to argue that the natives shouldn't be exposed to TV so that they don't lose their charming native customs? Maybe bin Laden doesn't want his neighbors to watch TV because it's not Islamic but so what? That's his problem.
