>>think more along the lines of Star Trek prime directive<<

I loathe Star Trek and have never watched an entire episode all the way through.

But I really don't think we force anybody to sell us anything, or to buy anything from us.

I know the Brits did this in China during the Opium War, but I think they were still under the spell of mercantilism.

Capitalism is the antithesis of mercantilism.

As for not interfering in the affairs of other countries, I think that's very unrealistic. The US owes its existence, in part, to the assistance of France, Poland, and Spain (not many people know about the assistance given by Galvez, the Governor of the then-Spanish colony of Louisiana, but one of my ancestors served in his army.)
