If the US does anything more than pro forma with Syria, I will blow a gaskett. It will prove to me that the whole excercize was ill considered. Since I don't think that the administration is so stupid, I think Powell is talking out of school or quoted out of context.

My take, fwiw, is that neither Powell nor anybody else in the Bush administration is under any illusion as to the role that Syria has been playing vis-a-vis Iraq and Hizbollah, but they have not decided how to handle Syria in the post-Saddam world. Therefore, they will offer some carrots, and a healthy dose of intimidation, and see if Bashar Assad can be squeezed into better behavior. Bashar Assad is not very bright and has already shown that he can be led by the nose by Sheikh Nasrallah. I suspect the US will try putting a good scare into him - under cover of some soothing diplomatic words. TWT.
