Nadine, it wouldn't surprise me if the 911 attack and other threats are seen as so serious that something just has to be done. Just bumbling on with an international shambles isn't very clever. The USA isn't tough enough to boss everyone on earth around. Bossy people tend to get a few little problems from the underlings. Better to hand external issues off to the UN.

Herding 6 billion people [who seem to be a weird mix of sheep and cat] is too difficult for 300 million Americans, most of whom wouldn't know where Canada is, let alone Syria and would have even less idea about other globally important issues such as radio spectrum rights in Auckland.
