Quit blaming France. Bush snubbed France and Germany when he first came to power. He was very rude to them on his first visit to Europe. Shrugged off their concerns and said my way or the highway. So of course they are going to dislike Bush. But after 9-11, they opened their hearts to us and really cooperated. Then Bush went bull-headed and unilateral again. You can blame both sides maybe, but a smart diplomatic president would have found the best win-win solution and kept the world united.

Sure our allies (or former allies) want to cooperate on counter-terrorism, but trust starts at the top, and so does cooperation. Bush could have had Saddam out with a huge coalition if he'd played it differently from the start, like his father did. Same result at half the cost. But he was very bull-headed and impatient. That may achieve results quickly but does not make friends. And now after this war we are going to need all the frinds and help we can get. But neither side trusts the other, so it probably wont happen. And we'll get stuck with the full headache and costs.
