JP Essene was referring to truly Moslem lands in the Middle East which they had always recovered in the past.

Do not forget that Spain (Southern Spain to be exact) and the Ottoman territories were NOT originally Moslem territories. Those were conquered or occupied territories. No wonder the Moslems could not hold on to them! Those lands were recovered by Christians with an indefatigable zeal and fervor for their religion and homelands!

Do you really think it is going to be a different story this time around?

If we look at what Britain had to go through over the centuries in regard to its attempt to control Ireland, we may begin to get some idea of what might happen to the Americans and others trying to hold on to Iraq.

From the tremendous amount of aid that the Israelis have been getting from overseas sources, one would have expected the Palestinian issue to have been history long ago. But NO! It still persists largely because of the ongoing aggressive occupation of land by the much-hated Israelis (Jews to be exact!) and, more importantly, because of very strong emotions rooted in Islam. I tend to agree with JP Essene in that there will be Iraqis and others who will give their country's occupiers a lot of problems. To be sure, any problems that arise will be greatly exacerbated by the clash of cultures and religions.

It was bad enough between the Brits and the Irish terrorists. It will probably be worse in Iraq.

Perhaps the best course of action is to develop in earnest technology that will "wean" the West from oil. But this is very, very difficult indeed. We shall always need oil, no matter what, because of its great variety of convenient and extremely useful by-products!!! For sure, a little progress is being made in the development of the new technology. But I think it will not have much impetus and make rapid progress until the world begins to be very short of oil.
