allende was a disaster for chile That's just your opinion. No matter what one thinks of Allende, it's hard to defend an anti-democratic coup that brought the ruthless General Pinochet to power on 9/11/1973. If Chileans didn't like the programs Allende put into place and weren't satisfied with his government, they could have voted him out of office in the next election. That is how democratic forms of government are suppossed to work. Ending a 100 year tradition of democracy by installing Pinochet via a coup is hardly good for democracy. Is the U.S. pro or anti democracy? We certainly weren't supporting any democratic principles in Chile when we help General Pinochet gain power via a coup.
