Maurice - Kumar, the USA isn't in Iraq to free Iraqis. That's a side-effect. There are swarms of countries which could do with being freed, but the USA isn't leaping to the rescue.

Oh for shame Maurice. It is somewhat tiring to always hear about motivations in such simplified form. This seems to happen on both sides of the political spectrum - on this board, among politicians, ... . The liberals claim this war is about political gain for Pres Bush and ignore the fact that there are humanitarian reasons for the war regardless of Bush's motivations - and realistically Bush, the very religious man, probably does consider the humanitarian aspects to some degree (is a good deed done for the wrong reasons still worthwhile? I think it is.). The conservatives focus on the WMD and pooh-pooh the fact that the US might want to show the world resolve so that future Bin Ladens will not make the mistake of assuming that the US is a pansy.

The reality that all of this things, from the moral to the banal, probably played a role. The only question is wieghting. So yes, Bush probably did weigh the humanitarian aspect, and almost certainly Bush would not have invaded a democracy with WMD unless they were much more obviously threatening US than Iraq was. But even if you disagree with my weighting, can we not assume that are political enemies are immoral/banal?
