I had an English teacher in high school who staged a psycho-drama in which he stepped on the flag and a student derided him for it. In the aftermath the teacher revealed the "ruse" and asked the class to write about the incident as they observed it. The fallout of this caused the teacher to be put in a non-teaching position (curriculum development) and he eventually left to produce film strips for the educational field. Previous to this they had a forum for the community to voice their opinions and I especially remember an Army veteran defending his right to free speech. Of course the teacher's stance was neither pro nor anti anything, only an effort to get students to examine not only their views but sort out feelings and facts.

This teacher was honest and did not call something fictional a documentary. This would be my only caveat before showing students a film that makes this claim. It would need to be tempered with some equal time to it's critics. Just because the Academy gave it an award does not mean it is what they claim.....a documentary. Even Moore defends it by saying you don't need facts to defend humour.
