Sun buys into set-top box market
From: Ziff-Davis News Network

Sun Microsystems has agreed to buy Diba, a manufacturer of set-top boxes for televisions that allow users to access the Net.

The move is intended to further the spread of Sun's Java programming language, particularly within the consumer electronics market. Diba, based in Menlo Park, Calif., will become part of Sun's new consumer technologies group, and will work with Sun to build products such as Internet-enabled televisions, satellite boxes and telephones.

"By leveraging the Java software platform and Java-enabled microprocessors with Diba's experience in assembling components into complete solutions, Sun hopes to enable OEMs to take advantage of the market's vast potential sooner rather than later," Sun CEO Scott McNealy said in a press release.

Financial terms of the deal were not released. Diba CEO Farzad Dibachi and Chairman Farid Dibachi will report directly to Chet Silvestri, president of Sun's consumer technologies group.

Sun Microsystems is based in Mountain View, Calif.
