The one thing I agree with the neocons on is that the UN indeed is dead. But not because it failed to approve of US aggression, but rather because it connived at that aggression for 12 years via a brutal sanctions regime that served to make the US invasion much easier.

Looking back it is quite obvious that the US has been striving since 1991 to install a puppet regime in Iraq. When the most draconian sanctions in history -- sanctified by the UN -- proved insufficient, then they resorted to outright aggression. The UN served to provide political cover for US imperialism all those years. The failure of the UN to approve the final US attack cannot undo the terrible evils of 12 years of brutal sanctions that caused the premature death of hundreds of thousands of Iraq civilians and greatly weakened that country's ability to defend itself.

I say good riddance to this revolting organization that has sunk even lower than the old League of Nations. Long past time for people to sweep away the illusion that the UN can do anything to check the appetite of powerful aggressors.
