T, In all honesty, I don't think Wayne was a coward. When asked why he didn't serve, he gave a legitimate answer: too young for WWI and too old for WWII.

Still, it is amazing that so many people consider him a war hero. He was a good propagandist. My favorite movie of his is the one where he backs McCarthyism to the hilt. Well, that and "The Mongol." I suppose they didn't have casting directors back in those days. <g>
