Intel 800MHz Pentium 4s, Canterwood arrive on earth

Prepare for "treasure rot"

By INQUIRER staff: Monday 07 April 2003, 07:52

TWO SHOPS IN Tokyo's electronics area – Akihabara – are demonstrating Pentium 4s using the new 800MHz front side bus.
According to Akiba PC Watch, the models appear to be based on Intel's "Canterwood" i875p chipset, which was slated to debut at a Developer Forum in Taipei in a week's time.

That show is cancelled because of fear of the SARS virus, but Intel did tell attendees that it would make separate announcements of products to make up for the cancellation.

The Japanese site has shots of the machine and some specifications, but in a picturesque turn of phrase describes the system as causing "treasure rot" – which is to say that if you want one of these brand new systems, expect to pay a few dollars more.

Intel is expected to launch its Springdale chipsets next month – at which time no doubt we'll see it release hyperthread capable Pentium 4s. One of the processors in this system is a Pentium 4 2.6GHz product which supports the 800MHz front side bus, and presumably hypethreading too. µ
