I agree. It is entirely appropriate for for the Secretary of defense, Rumsfeld, to be a civilian. The policy and oversight role of the Department of Defense is a key role, and I am glad the United States Government is organized the way it is. I have been critical of Rumsfeld's tendency to play General -- I think Generals make better Generals than the Secretary of Defense. Bill equates my statements with criticism of the military. I am not critical of the military, but I am critical of the stretching of the role of the current Secretary of the Department of Defense, Rumsfeld, when he decides to be both a Secretary and a General.
