Frankly, I don't understand the notion that having the UN behind the action would legitimize the action at all. If it is the right thing to do, it is the right thing to do with or without the UN. The UN clearly doesn't have the best interests of the US at heart. In fact, if you have traveled around the world at all, you will know that most people have a minimum of a mild distaste for the U.S.

the fact is, if the UN had done its job, the unilateral or bilateral or whatever, action would not have been necessary.

Why do you want or need international approval? I believe that our cultural values are solid. And for the most part, I find the cultural values of the countries whose approval you seek to be a bit suspect.
