I DO think there is no way to get away from being invaders- and the denotation really leads the connotation (imo)-

First, I agree that the US and UK are invading Iraq. You are correct to insist on people stepping up to that hard fact.

Second, the word was brought up in the context of the BBC coverage of the War on Iraq. The BBC is creating the context which determines the connotation of 'invaders'. For example, 'the American unjustified invasion of a nation actively co-operating with the UN' contributes to a particular connotation.

I will simplify. I stopped watching when it became clear that the BBC was lying.
