Ted Re....Al Qaeda is not defeated in Afghanistan; just underground. There continue to be incidents where administration officials get wounded or killed by Taliban and al Qaeda operatives. Afghanistan continues to be jeopardy.
I never said Al Qaeda was defeated, I said Taliban was. Afghanistan still has local pockets of resistance, but a new government has been installed, and whatever Taliban there are left, hold no political power.
Very few like terrorism but those in the Muslim world see it as a way to wake up the West. It will not go away any time soon.
I didn't say it would. I said, that eventually they will see that terrorism hasn't furthered their objectives; and that the people will start to look for some other solution to their problems. There will always be radicals who will try to impose their ideas upon society; however, given enough time, democracy will win out. In the past 70 yrs. over 70 countries have chosen democracy. It is likely, given a chance, the arab nations will also give it a go.
The Russians went from the Tsars to democracy by way of 90 years of what they called communism. Democracy needs the best of soil, the best of weather, the best of neighbors and the best of intentions to make it
Certainly there are challenges to bringing about democracy. However, once instituted, democracy certainly has seen a longer life span than communism, and has been replacing monarchies and totalitarian regimes. Communism in fact, lately has been trying to survive by going more democratic, such as China, and Russia.
The Iraqis do not have a clue.
My bet is that you are the one without a clue. Within 6 months, I bet that we will see the beginnings of democratic institutions all over Iraq. And I bet that even some of the religious leaders will embrace democracy, and work in a democratic system. |
