Obviously anything that changes with your perspective must be seen in person, so I shouldn't be criticizing from the computer anyway.

I dunno - maybe it's related to birefringent crystals where the index is not the same for all directions within the crystal?

I bet he gets a decent price for the middle floor rental; looks like a very nice situation.
