Looks like the leaders of Russia, France, and Germany and Annen from the UN are going to go to Russia to discuss Iraq,

But it looks like Condi Rice beat them to the punch... Who knows??

There's definitely a role for the UN in Iraq. I'm just a bit skeptical about placing the country under UN control given the obvious bickering going on, as well as the seeming complicity amongst many of the UNSC members in supporting Saddam's regime (at least doing little to oppose it)..

And the State Department obviously is under pressure to control rebuilding efforts since they wish to rebuild relations with some of these countries (since diplomacy is their "bag").. I'm not keen on Chalabi either, if only because he really doesn't have much support within Iraq. But I'm entirely willing to permit him to "sell himself" as an interim leader, if he can create some unity.

But I'm nowhere near as confident that the UN wouldn't do more harm than good with regard to helping to create a new governmental system. All of the petty jealousies would make it very difficult to do what needs to be done, and they carry the baggage of having facilitated Saddam's regime. Something most Iraqis might have trouble forgetting about.

We'll see..
