Ref <I generally agree with you except for the "unable to capture Al Nassarya" phrase. It was never the intent of the thrust to Bagdad to become bogged down in taking every town along the way>

I agree that the Pentagon and the media intially put on the spin that Al Nassrya was meant to be bypassed. However I have a hard time believing that ! It was evident even to this armchair amateur military strategist that Nassrya was a critical crossroad town like Bastogne during the Battle of Bulge in WW2. Bypassed Nassrya was a thorn in the side of the advancing US troops, becoming a base for harassing attacks on the vulnerable supply lines. Eventually the Marines fought their way thru the "ambush alley' of Nassrya and took control of the town. Control of Al Nassrya allowed the launch of the multi prong advance on Baghdad which has been unstoppable.

If someone made a decision to deliberately bypass Nassrya in the first wave, it was a big mistake. Even now Nassrya has not been completely pacified. Strengthening the defenses of Nassrya was one of the few things Saddam did right in this campaign.
