I recall that american casualties for the invasion of the japanese were pegged from a minimun of 250,000 to a maximun of a million. Much of it was based on the 50,000+ casualties at Okinawa, and partly used to justify the use of the atomic bombs. They have been bomb happy ever since....lol.
