Surely, Bush's in the driver's seat, yet, he's not the only one driving along the Mideast freeway --many other cars and trucks clog his path... and the Israeli truck keep cutting in front of him. Most people believe that the US Prez --the so-called Commander-in-Chief-- is all-powerful and surrounded by mere advisers and yes men... Well, such a state of affairs may be true of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a microstate, or even France, a rather centralized, medium-sized power but it doesn't apply to the US. Especially in foreign affairs, I see the US prez more as a figurehead amidst a nexus of conflicting forces. And it's not up to a single US president to reshuffle the geopolitical fabric overnight...
