Gorillas' DNA is 95% identical to that of humans. Yet you cannot impregnate a woman with a chimp's sperm. So even 95% similarity will not do.

I could consider the possibility that an omnipotent God could trigger pregnancy in a woman just by pointing at her belly and saying "Fiat Embryonis!", destroying genetic material in the nucleus of one ovum, inseminating it with the nucleus of another cell (with full 46 chromosomes), oh and remembering to change the X-chromosome into a Y-chromosome so that the kid will not be a complete clone of Mary and will also be a boy.

I guess you can see from the above that I have heard about a bit more than that :-)

So, it is impossible? Nothing is "impossible" if you decide to suspend all disbelief and believe in an omnipotent "God" without proof. The rest is easy.

But is it fantastic? Absolutely. (This was, after all, how I termed "virgin birth & a man being the literal son of God")

Uh, no.

Have you heard of Occam's Razor? Out of two theories that explain a phenomenon equally well, the simpler one tends to be true...

Example: I saw a light go by in the sky. Is it:
(1) A UFO coming to abduct me?
or
(2) A plane landing in the nearby airport?

No doubt you see where this is going :-)

Assuming the story is true, the phenomenon is that there is a woman who seems to be a virgin but is pregnant. Is the explanation that:
(1) She was impregnated by God through "immaculate conception" and will give birth to the Son of God?
or
(2) She had an exceptionally elastic hyphen (as sometimes happens) and made the story up so she wouldn't be ashamed of being pregnant out of wedlock
