>>Turkey warns US over Kirkuk and Mosul

08/04/2003   KurdishMedia.com - By Bryar Mariwani
London (KurdishMedia.com) 08 April 2003: The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday warned that Turkey would invade south Kurdistan if Kurds seized the Kurdish cities of Kirkuk and Mosul.

During his visit to Ankara last week, US Secretary of State Colin Powell pledged that the Kurds would not be allowed to advance "beyond a certain line" around Mosul and Kirkuk, it was reported in Turkish media. Erdogan said that he did not believe the Americans would not keep their promise.

The Turkish daily Hurriyet reported yesterday that Ankara had passed on a harsh-warning note to the US against allowing Kurds to seize Mosul and Kirkuk, warning that such a development would prompt its intervention in the region.
The presence of American forces in south Kurdistan makes it impossible for Turkey to intervene in south Kurdistan.

Americans have warned Turkey several times that they do not want to see a Turkish intervention in south Kurdistan for any reason.

American Special Forces and Kurdish Peshmarga fighters are working closely to liberate the Kurdish cities of Kirkuk and Mosul.<<

>>Kurdish and U.S. troops close in on Mosul

09/04/2003   KurdishMedia.com - By P. Jaff
London (KurdishMedia.com) Kurdish and U.S. forces have taken a key mountain, 15 km northeast of Mosul, and are now closing in on the city.

Kurdish peshmergas and U.S. special forces have been pushing towards Mosul, the third largest city of Iraq, for the past two weeks and now have gained control of the Maqloub Mountain removing the last line of defence of the city of Mosul.

Hoshyar Zebari, a senior KDP figure told a Reuters reporter that, "the area has been heavily defended by Iraqis throughout the campaign. From our perspective this is the most important gain of the northern front so far."<<
