From last year, the middle-class consumption in China has really been picked up. So historical example cannot always tell what happens in real time, especially for a fast-moving economy in China. And China also export more and more to other Asian countries now. So to cut off trade is definitely more destructive for the US economy than to Chinese economy. That is exactly why the US politicians would never do that.
