True, and a good point. If the long-term world consequences of this war are less bad than I fear, it may quite possibly turn out as a net win for humanity. Much depends on whether US/Europe relations get mended, on the reaction of North Korea, and on whether the Middle East has been net destabilized or stabilized.

The total cost of the Iraq adventure is probably going to be circa $200B, and I am assuming that in the absence of the war the money would instead be spent on tax cuts for wealthy US citizens.

On the other hand, if that $200B were spent on AIDS prevention in Africa, I would guess the humanitarian payback would be several times greater than any benefit in Iraq.

And of course, it's pretty clear that humanitarian concerns are NOT driving US policy, since there have been many comparably bad dicators in the recent past and the present.
