Great post Dabum. You explanation of the "dollar vs Euro" rationale is the best I've read. The bottom line is that the Mideast oil is too valuable to the world and to our way of life for us to have left it's control in the hands of unstable and unfriendly regimes in the Mideast. That sets America's stated principles and ideals on their ears, however. Imperialism, refusal to acknowledge the sovereign rights of other nations, use of war to accomplish selfish economic means?

I don't believe we are in an ideological war with Russia. China is a different story and I think that in the next decades they will compete with us economically and militarily. If we can control their access to cheap energy we will clearly have a huge leg up in terms of what they can accomplish.

You raise an interesting philosophical issue: if some actions are justified in the name protecting the survival of a nation in a dangerous world, are those same actions justified when we have enough weaponry to assure that we're left alone? Are they justified to hold our place as the only world superpower? Are they justified to protect our standard of living? Are they counterproductive in a world where our economic and physical well-being are increasingly threatened by hit and miss terrorist attacks mounted by growing numbers of radical groups?

The wisdom of our action is not clear. We've pursued this policy in the Mideast for decades and although it's paid it's dividends, will it this time? As you implied, we may be a democracy but these are questions our government is not publicly debating. It amazes me that when our emotions take us in one direction and our heads take us in another, our emotions usually win out. We are not as far up the evolutionary ladder as I sometimes hope.

I enjoy your postings. Ed
