Democracy costs trillions to defend, and defending democracy around the world is what America does. It is what America will continue to do long after you and I are gone, so no sense in whining about that.

Where do you get that notion from? Were we "defending" democracy when we, via the CIA, overthrew democratic regimes in Iran, Chile and Guatemala. Or when we interferred with democractic elections in countries from Italy to Nicaragua. The U.S. defends democracy only when it is in our interests to do so. When it is in our interests to destroy or interfere with democracies, we will also do that as a review of world history over the past 50 years clearly demonstrates.
