Sanyo V-SA701 with MSM5200 at J-Phone slacker, Ya scooped me. I was about to tell you ... Some good news....the V-SA701 is now available from J-Phone. This is the first commercial W-CDMA handset based on a Qualcomm chipset. I believe that it is the MSM5200 since no GSM service is offered. I just went up to check (on the Nokia 6650) as a result of the following blurb that just arrived in my Inbox: >> W-CDMA Gains Momentum in Japan 09 April 2003 -- PMN -- Customers are subscribing to W-CDMA 3G services in Japan at an increasing rate, with both J-Phone and NTT DoCoMo reporting sharply higher adoption over the last two months. J-Phone added 15,300 customers in March, while DoCoMo's FOMA subscriber numbers grew by 138,400. The combined number of W-CDMA additions still falls far short of the 914,100 increase KDDI saw on its CDMA2000 network. However, the number of W-CDMA subscribers added last month increased three-fold at both J-Phone and DoCoMo, showing continued improvement from the second half of 2002 when monthly additions were only a few thousand. J-Phone is marketing the Nokia 6650, a tri-mode GSM/GPRS/W-CDMA handset, as part of its Vodafone Global Standard service. It promotes the ability to roam internationally as one of the key features of the handset. DoCoMo, in contrast, has introduced a new range of dual-mode handsets with the ability to roam on existing PDC infrastructure when out of W-CDMA coverage. The handsets have improved battery life and are lighter and better specified than the original FOMA devices. The sharp increase last month helped DoCoMo to meet its March 2003 target of 320,000 FOMA users. DoCoMo had previously lowered the target from 1.3m users. << - Eric -
