There was never much doubt we would prevail in Iraq, but at what cost in innocent lives and in damage to our image in the world? Giving legitimacy to preemptive strikes is a very bad precedent, because it opens the door for others to launch their own preemptive strikes -- including against us. Furthermore, what Pandora's Box is now open in situations like India/Pakistan, China/Taiwan, and North Korea/South Korea?

I do not believe abandoning diplomacy in favor of the forcible imposition of our will on other sovereigns is a good idea, because it makes a mockery of international law. Once that happens, our only option is to pour huge resources into the military -- enough to maintain absolute dominance -- and eventually that could erode our economy enough that we will actually be weaker as a result, as an ironic unintended consequence.

The Romans were once considered invincible, too.

The U.S. had better increase its birth rate fast, because we're going to need a lot of soldiers and missile builders.
