Scaremongering? I don't think so. You need to read the history of the Russians in Afghanistan.

The Russians where trying to make Afghanistan part of their empire and the people knew it. Also the Russian army was often rather pathetic including things like Russian soldiers selling fuel and even weapons to the Mujahadeen, and the enemies of the Russians had massive outside aide, including supplies and training and information from a superpower. Also we have already gotten the job more done then the Russian ever did. Large regions of the country never came under control of the Russians or their local allies. Not everyone in Afghanistan sees us as liberators but it seems a majority do, while the Russians never had more then a small number who saw them that way.
