The Arab reporters instantly reported that Saddam is being changed to America and this is a sign of things to come. Effectively there is only an ownership change of Iraq.

Fortunately soon the flag was lowered and the Iraqi flag went up. The reporters then changed tune and said the lieutenant has corrected his mistake and that the Iraqi flag is going up as it should be. Followed by some talk of how Iraqis should decide the future of Iraq.

The point here is that we are dealing with a region that mistrusts us immensely. And whether it is out of mistrust or for their own ulterior motives, any mistakes we make will be looked at in the worst possible light. Convincing them otherwise is a difficult act, but it is not impossible. I am not sure which is more important, avoiding mistakes or doing good. If I were to choose, I'd say the emphasis should be on avoiding mistakes.

In months to come, I expect to hear a lot of misrepresentation of American actions along with a lot whining about how they are being unfair to us. This is what it is and it was always obvious it would be so. But if in fact Iraq is transformed to be better than any of the countries in the region, then it will be worth the effort. So far the war has gone much better than I expected, but it is too early to say. The final verdict will not be out for a few years.
