Fred, you are mischaracterizing and you know it. I never heard anyone come to the defense of Saddam. Go back and read my early posts on this. I explicitly said I agree with the stated goals, I just don't trust the government. In summary, these were the reasons for the anti-war camp and they are as valid now as they were then. Nor can you be sure that the future will not prove them right.

- preemptive strike on such lose conditions is dangerous precedent for the world.
- "nation building" can backfire greatly.
- given US support of numerous corrupt regimes, there is no reason to believe Bush's stated humanitarian concerns.
- The economic costs would be too high for us and for the world (note IMF report from yesterday).
- Weakening UN and NATO instead of fixing them was wrong.
- There may well be an increase in terrorism recruitments.
- Too many things could have (and some of them still may) go terribly wrong. That it has gone better so far than expected doesn't mean the risk wasn't there. Just as driving home without accident when you're pissed drunk doesn't mean it was ok for you to do so.

So in all, I don't feel any different than I did before, except that some level of tension has been released knowing the casualties are now on the way down and that the troops will be home soon.

There is still a long way before pro-war camp can gloat. Military victory was never in question. Nor was the fact that Iraqis hate Saddam and will be happy to see him gone.
