My academic friends were overwhelmingly against the war, while my Bronx friends, many of whom are quite liberal (as am I), were for the invasion. IMO, the difference was that in growing up in the Bx., and knowing murderers and thugs, we knew that reason couldn't work with Saddam. My academic friends had sheltered backgrounds. They thought "proper process" was important. I just laughed when I thought about applying "proper process" to Gene, also known as the brute who's thumb was close to the size of my wrist. I saw Gene beat someone's face to pulp with a chain. The person was wearing a "Wrangler" patch on his jeans and didn't belong to the Wrangler gang that claimed exclusive rights to the patch. Everyone in the BX. knew several Gene types. "Procedure" indeed! fred
