"When Prophecy Fails," about an end-of-the-world group who wait for Jesus to return on a given date and when he didn't, they claimed never to be precise about the date.

Off topic...

This might be going from the sublime to the ridiculous but that reminded me of an episode of the 70's sitcom, "Barney Miller." (Don't know if anyone ever watched that, but it was one of the best of all times, IMO.) In the episode, a religious fanatic is predicting the end of the world at midnight. He's locked up in the jail and as he's being moved, one of the cops points out that it's now past midnight. Rather than admitting he's wrong, he turns and says, "See, and you thought prayer wouldn't work."
