Many reasons, to name a few, Saddam to give up Baghdad means low casualties on both Iraqi side the the US/Brits side; To end the war faster (before the heat wave comes), which in turn has many other benefits, save US money and face (yes, the US like to save their face just as Asians, even if a lot of Americans do not admit), and the majority of US troops can withdraw earlier to spare another tens of thousands US troops for possible Gulf War syndrome. It is does not take a scientist to realize the environmental condition in Iraq is very very unhealthy.
