NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Elements of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines patrolling Baghdad Thursday found caches of missiles, including some Scuds and Russian Frog missiles capable of carrying warheads, Jim Bruton, an NBC News producer embedded with the Marines reported to MSNBC from the Iraqi capital.
Marine ordnance experts are now trying to determine whether some of the warheads found in the weapons caches contain banned chemical or biological agents, he said.
U.S. forces have been scouring Iraq in search for weapons of mass destruction, which the Bush administration claims the Iraqi regime produced under the regime of Saddam Hussein.
Bruton told MSNBC that the Marines have been on combat patrol in Baghdad since Wednesday night. He said they were led to a site where they found caches of surface-to-air missiles, such as SA2s and SA3s.
The Marines also entered a chalk factory where they uncovered a couple of Scud missiles that were almost fully assembled, and components for assembling the missile.
The U.S. troops also found two tractor trailers loaded with four Russian Frog missiles, with a range of about 50 miles, that can carry warheads, the NBC producer said.
