Can't Sun at some point make this API thing a non-issue by simply putting the "Pure Java" API on the Internet as a free download or by selling it at a nominal price? That was MSFT's strategy +/- for dealing with Netscape. My understanding is that both the Sun API and MSFT's rogue variety run on the same JVM (Java Virtual Machine), so if MSFT chooses to leave the API piece out of what it delivers, what's to stop Sun from filling the gap?

Am I overlooking some crucial technical detail?

JMHO.
