Of course the war was optional. If we'd wanted to we could have left Saddam to be inspected and circled for years and nobody can truthfully say that wouldn't have been just fine. But once Bush decided to invade, you have to support the troops and hope for the best. I'm still not convinced Saddam was ever any real threat to us or our allies. Look how weak his military turned out to be. And the WMD stories may be very much dated.
