Hi John: No, I didn't see that one. Last story I saw was the
renaming of the cellular services and the marketing realignment.
And yes, I think that's right--that's why I bought GTE after all
the years of saying I'd never buy this one (unhappy customers) but,
as you say, this isn't a plain vanilla telco anymore--it's got a
real chance to be one of the big growth stories and yet it's got the
safety and fat dividends. I wonder how long these dividends can be
maintained, though, and not just for GTE--all of the telcos have to
spend big time to keep up with the competition now, something they've
never had to do before, and since the dividends have historically been such a big chunk of earnings, I wonder if they'll eventually have to
be diverted to grow the businesses. Whatever they do, I think this is
an excellent stock to hold onto for the long term on its own merits or
as a possible buyout or merger candidate and it's especially attractive at these prices in this market--not too many bargains right
now.
