Thanks for finding that. I'd read "And the Band Played On" years ago and it was there that I'd read about Patient Zero-- the same Gaetan Dugas in the piece you posted.

From thatparagraph, it looks as though he knew he had something communicable and got off on infecting other people. At that point in history, I don't think anyone knew exactly what AIDS was or its mode of infection (through blood products, primarily), but boy is it scary to read that.
