8:30am 04/11/03 US retail sales surge a surprising 2.1% in March
By Rex Nutting
Retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 2.1% in March, the largest gain since October 2001's 6.2 percent post-attack surge, the Commerce Department estimated Friday. Retail sales had plunged 1.3% in February. Half of March's gains were due to a 5.3% rise in auto sales. Excluding autos, retail sales rose 1.1% after a 0.6% decline in February. Sales were also boosted by a record 7.9% rise in sales at hardware and garden stores. The figures were a surprise to Wall Street, whose economists had forecast a 0.8 percent rise in total sales and a 0.5 percent increase in ex-auto sales. Unlike industry data that showed a 0.2% drop in year-over-year same-store sales in March, the government data are adjusted to account for this year's late Easter holiday.
