Terry, Mostly, Ford was forced by circumstances. Nixon resigning and the surrender in Vietnam, he needed to reassure a lot of people. I have a lot of respect for Ford as a man. He was a bit dumb and, of course, a right wing nutburger. But I think he had the steadiness we needed after the shenanigans of LBJ and Tricky.
