It comes down to a means and ends argument. Those who believe the end justifies the means, or those who like to make those kinds of arguments, will think that winning the war makes some sort of point. Other people think means are every bit as important as ends- and historically, means often set more of a precedent for the long haul. And of course how many times can you be told you stand for what you do not stand for, and side with people you do not side with, before you decide that the people you are talking with are rather thick.
