No...Don't attempt to put words in my mouth. I said this:

<<Hate doesn't really need a reason. It fuels itself. This argument is a canard and I hope you are intelligent enough to discern this. >>

And that is what I meant.

It is far easier to hate the US than Canada or France. Those two countries project no shadow. France, in particular, lives in a "glorious in their own mind" past with not a whit of moral persuasion or manifest destiny.

The US still thinks there is hope for the world and remains ready to play a part. They continue to send missionaries to parts of the world that have massacred them in the past. They use up their good will by pointing out the human rights violations in every country including their own. They spill their own blood to remove brutal dictators and spend their limited resources to attempt to reinvigorate vanquished economies and inculcate democratic institutions. In the words of Colin Powell, "the only land we have asked of those countries we have helped in the past is a plot to bury our dead".

I have lived in 13 countries and travelled through more than thirty. I have met hundreds of Muslims and argued everything from politics and religion to sports with them. I spent days discussing the issues with UN peacekeeping forces roaming Palestine shortly after the first Iraq war.

People like Osama don't need the US to project their hate. We simply make the largest and most profound statement. We will continue to be the enemy of those who consider the solutions to achieving their goals can only be attained by mass destruction of others... It isn't our goal nor should it be, to live in a world with Osama or his ilk....nor must our behavior change to satisfy his whims.

All people must learn to respect the dignity and sanctity of human life...even that "circle" of Arabs. Failure to do so will inevitably put them in the cross hairs of the US and add grist to this enmity.

It will continue to be painful to us but fatal to them.
